The AEW World Heavyweight Wrestling Double Layer Championship Belt - What to Know!

Let's face it; professional wrestling is a weird and wonderful world. It's the only sport where you can witness a man pretending to be an angry gorilla or a masked luchador locked in an inter-species feud that would make even the most bizarre storylines on WWE seem logical. It's also a sport with no boundaries, meaning that wrestlers can be found fighting at any given point and place. In other words, professional wrestling is the perfect place for outlandish championship titles like the AEW World Heavyweight Wrestling Double Layer Championship Belt!

What is the AEW Double Layer Wrestling Belt?

The AEW World Heavyweight Wrestling Double Layer Championship Belt is the official title belt for the upcoming All Elite Wrestling (AEW) promotion. The AEW promotion was first announced in February 2019, when former WWE head producer, Cody Rhodes, signed a 10-year contract with Turner Sports and created the AEW brand. The AEW Double Layer Wrestling Belt is the first championship title introduced by the fledgling wrestling promotion.

The Double Layer belt sees the championship belt break free from the confines of the traditional leather straps and moulded plastic pieces used in other companies' belts.

The AEW Double Layer Wrestling Belt is the first championship title introduced by the fledgling wrestling promotion, and it's also the first belt introduced by the AEW promotion since February 2019, when it was announced that former WWE head producer, Cody Rhodes, signed a 10-year contract with Turner Sports to create the AEW brand.

A Brief History of the AEW Double Layer Wrestling Belt

The AEW Double Layer Wrestling Belt was first seen on the August 31, 2019, episode of AEW Double or Nothing, where it was paraded with the belt's gold-plated edges and brass bottom layer on display for the AEW audience. The Double Layer Belt was designed by Scott Hudson, a former WWE designer and TNA Wrestling designer.

Hudson also designed the AEW Double or Nothing Ring and the AEW logo. Since Hudson's past projects include designing the massive and iconic WWE Championship Belt, he certainly had some big shoes to fill for the AEW championship belt. Given Hudson's previous work, the design for the Double Layer Belt was inspired by the "massive, over-the-top" championship belts found in boxing. This inspiration was also apparent in the over-the-top designs of the AEW Double or Nothing Ring and logo.

The Meaning of Each Colour on the Double Layer Belt

The AEW Double Layer Wrestling Belt's design is as outlandish as the belt itself. Held together by a pair of leather straps, the Double Layer Belt is split into two layers. The top layer is black, and the bottom layer is gold, a nice contrast from the usual black-and-silver combinations found in almost every other major title belt.

However, the real reason behind these colours is that they were selected to reflect the two companies involved in forming AEW. The black section on top represents the "dark" side of the company—the management side of the business. Meanwhile, the gold on the bottom represents the "light" side of the company's wrestlers.

The Gold-Plated Edges on the AEW Wrestling Belt

Considering the two different colours of the top and bottom layers of the Double Layer Belt, it seems fitting that the belt has some gold-plated edges. The gold-plated edges are a nice touch and are a fitting addition to the Double Layer Belt. They create an elaborate centrepiece to a belt designed to "sparkle on the outside and be functional on the inside." The gold-plated edges also contrast the Double Layer Belt's black and gold colour scheme.

The Brass Bottom Layer of the AEW Championship Belt

The AEW Championship Belt's bottom layer is made from solid brass. It's worth mentioning that brass is a metal alloy, not a single metal. It's a combination of several other metals, such as copper, zinc, and nickel. While brass has been used in various industries since antiquity, it's now mostly used in decorative items such as furniture, lamps, and decorative wall plates.

All this is to say that the brass bottom layer of the Double Layer Wrestling Belt is a peculiar choice. However, the brass bottom layer of the belt does create a nice contrast between the top and bottom layers of the belt.

Is This the New AAA Mega World Heavyweight Title?

The AEW Double Layer Wrestling Belt was designed by Scott Hudson, a former designer for the WWE and TNA Wrestling. Hudson also designed the AEW Double or Nothing Ring and the AEW logo. Given Hudson's previous work, the design for the Double Layer Belt was inspired by the "massive, over-the-top" championship belts found in boxing.

This inspiration was also apparent in the over-the-top designs of the AEW Double or Nothing Ring and logo. Given Hudson's work on the Double Layer Belt and other AEW championship belts, the AEW Mega World Heavyweight Championship is expected to share many similarities with the Double Layer Belt.
